The Carter Legacy: Jimmy and Rosalynn’s Grandson Shares Insights

There has been a newfound calm at the Plains, Georgia home of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. Josh Carter, their grandson, gives us an inside look at their family life. When they first moved in, their house was a hive of activity, filled with visitors and their stories and trinkets from their travels across the world.

The Challenge of Care

The Carter Center announced in February that Jimmy, at the age of 98, had decided to forego aggressive medical treatment in favor of hospice care so that he may spend his last days at home with his loved ones. Rosalynn’s diagnosis of dementia, a difficult blow for any family to bear, was revealed three months later.

The Care Continues

Josh, who is 39 years old, says that ever since Jimmy was admitted to the hospice, he and his family have never been alone. Grandparents may count on regular visits from their children and grandchildren. Recently, only relatives and caretakers have visited owing to their health. Jimmy and Rosalynn have maintained a high level of situational awareness throughout the shifts.

The Legacy Lives On

As Josh puts it, Grandpa Jimmy is “still fully Jimmy Carter.” He’s approaching 99 years old, yet he’s still got a bright mind and loves hearing everyone’s best wishes. Even though Rosalynn has dementia, she is still able to identify her loved ones and make new memories—especially after getting a full night’s sleep.

A Heartwarming Bond

Josh finds it inspiring that his grandparents are still able to hold hands and lean on each other despite everything that they’ve been through with memory loss. They have a wonderful relationship, and their love lasts.

Facing the Inevitable

The Carters have been making plans for what they know is coming. Josh understands that with Jimmy’s hospice care, his grandfather may pass away before his grandma. But they continue to concentrate on how to best show their appreciation to the Carters for the wonderful life they have given them.

Cherished Memories

Family members will always remember the Carters fondly. They have woven a tapestry of love and togetherness through their traditions of celebrating the New Year together, traveling to interesting locations, and spending quality time with their grandkids.

The Final Chapter

After giving it some thought, Josh Carter says, “we’re in the final chapter.” He finds comfort in the knowledge that his grandparents have left a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations, despite the fact that this is a difficult reality.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s story is a moving testament to the strength of love, family, and the human will.
