Kaylin Gillis, The boyfriend of the New York lady who was shot and killed after entering the incorrect driveway has spoken out to NBC, saying that the tragedy has completely changed his life.
Blake Walsh, 19, said in an interview on Tuesday that he, two buddies, and his girlfriend, Kaylin Gillis, got lost on the way to a party and ended up at the incorrect residence.
Mr. Walsh stated that as they were walking down the driveway, shots were fired. Ms. Gillis, age 20, took a bullet to the neck.
The 65-year-old suspect, Kevin Monahan, was denied bail after his arrest for murder.
“My world was taken from me Saturday,” Mr. Walsh said to NBC. In her words, “I didn’t want to be with anybody else, and I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.”
Mr. Walsh was cruising through Hebron, a rural community about 50 miles from Albany, New York, on a Saturday night in his Ford Explorer.
Mr. Walsh said that the four companions had mistaken Mr. Monahan’s address for the location of a party to which they had been invited.
There was no way to contact anyone via phone to get answers. When we realized we were at the wrong place, he said, “we began to leave, and that’s when everything happened.”
“My companion yelled, ‘They’re firing — go!'” When the deadly shot came through, I was trying to step on the throttle as quickly as I could,” Mr. Walsh recounted.
Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy claims Mr. Monahan fired twice at the car as the group was departing, despite Murphy’s assertion that the group “clearly” presented no threat.
- Mr. Walsh stated that the group had to go approximately five miles before they were able to make a mobile phone contact to EMS.
- Ms. Gillis had been shot in the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.
- Mr. Monahan has pleaded not guilty to the accusation of second-degree murder.
- Mr. Monahan’s attorney, Kurt Mausert, told NBC, “There were mistakes made by the drivers of the vehicles, mistakes by my client.”
But just because there’s a victim in a tragedy doesn’t indicate there’s a bad guy, either. To be a villain, in my opinion, one must have evil intentions, and I do not believe my client had evil intentions, as I believe the evidence will reveal,” he told WAMC.
Mr. Walsh said that he and Kaylin Gillis had been dating for almost four years when she was killed in a shooting.
Mr. Walsh stated in the interview that the pair often referred to themselves as the “2%” since they were aware that just two percent of high school sweethearts end up getting married.
“I want the world to know how good a person she really was and how she impacted everybody who had the fortunate opportunity to be in her life,” Mr. Walsh said.
Mr. Monahan “has not shown any remorse in this case,” Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy told CNN.
Mr. Monahan has been detained ever since his Sunday arrest. On Wednesday at Washington County Court, the judge refused his plea for bail.
The ruling was allegedly met with applause from Mr. Walsh’s supporters in the courtroom.
