Writing Dissertation

Are you trying to find some dissertation examples about the proper structure to follow? Well, in this article you will know how to do that.

As you may already know, dissertation writing is probably one of the longest documents you will work on. What is needed to understand with that is that it is more selective. It’s not like a tenure that is dedicated to a specific public. But more like a document for oneself or everyone out there. When you spend such a long period on your research, it is even more important to present it properly in a correct format. Below are the chapters and pages necessary to write your dissertation.

Things to Include in Dissertation Structure

As hard as writing a dissertation looks like, it is not. When you look at the topics, pages are necessary for research, as they give a general idea of what and how. These parts will combine and form a perfect structure for a professional dissertation.

1. Abstract

Add a summary of the research that you will do in this dissertation. It has a total of around 200–300 words overall. That will give an overview of your research and complete the insights as a standalone without having to go through the rest of the report.

2. Acknowledgement & Preface

Acknowledgement is where the writer expresses gratitude for all the help during their work. Whether their family, friends, university, superiors, colleagues or anyone who has helped to achieve this will be mentioned here as per the writer’s wish. The preface is a part that gets published with its sign, date, and place. This will also include the hypothesis and objective of your work.

3. Content Table with Page Numbers

The table of contents is where all major topics of your dissertation with page numbers are mentioned. It is also written in the same size and font as you use in the main body of your dissertation. The heading of the page ‘Title of contents’ should be in bold and placed at the centre. This will all help with the finding of the main places of your dissertation.

4. List of Abbreviations and Glossary

Various abbreviations and acronyms are used when you write a document of this length. It is always a good idea to include a glossary either at the beginning or end of your dissertation with all those words and phrases. Arrange them in alphabetical order for easy access to the reader. So, that will also save you time and effort to explain it to them throughout the document.

5. Introduction

A dissertation is a long document divided into many parts and pages so aim towards your research question and why you chose it. Furthermore, talk about what a reader could expect after reading. It is the first part that interacts with the reader, so make sure it’s hooking and gives a proper introduction to what they can expect to find ahead.

6. Literature Review

This section will have the part where past research from similar topics is included. Therefore, it is usually one of the long parts of your work. Here you will mention the current views about your topic, and why it fits into your research. Also, mention how your research will change its view process about existing thoughts and why you think so, etc. Therefore, seeing the importance of this section for your work, first discuss it with your supervisor to understand its necessities, according to your university guidelines.

7. Methodology

This section will elaborate on the analysis methods you use in the research and why. It will clarify your choices and reasons for doing so. The methodology will show the reader how you carry your research forward and why with those specific methods only.

8. Results

Mention whatever results you find while doing your research. Tell if your research question is reached or what is your overall findings with the work. It will be descriptive and not analytical. You will analyze those raw results you mention now in the discussion chapter of your work.

9. Discussion

Discuss whatever you find and your results with different points and possible scenarios. It should elaborate on the interpretation and deep analysis of your results. This should have a sum of your overall key findings about your dissertation. You can always find the guidance you wish to seek from various dissertation help websites online.

10. End Note

Conclude your dissertation with a wrap-up of everything you have done during your journey. Highlight your key findings, limitations and the importance of how this leads to further research. Answer what question you chose in the beginning and what lies ahead with this research. Criticize yourself here, and do not get scared to talk about where you fell short or feel limited. Complete your work by properly connecting it all.

11. References & Appendices

Form a list of all sources here, with the proper citation and mention from where you have used them. List everything systematically for others to find and use them whenever needed for additional support. The appendix should consist of the raw data, surveys, communications etc. that you used in your research and what results you achieved from them. One or both of these, as per the format given by your university will be at the end. Whether it’s qualitative or quantitative, this should hold the place accordingly.

Conclusion

By now, you might have already understood these main points and the structure of how your dissertation should look. A dissertation is something that looks like a book but is not, so it should still follow a structure and stay dedicated to its course of action. Writing a dissertation may look like a big task to begin with, but it gets easier as you go deep into it while acknowledging and learning throughout its way.
